Every passionate DIYer knows the importance of trustworthy tools and notions, but wading through the aisles of gems vs. junk takes time, trial, and experimentation! As a beginner sewist, it’s normal to feel hesitant or unsure where to start. Truthfully, you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment to start sewing — all you need are the basics.

Here's a helpful guide to some essential sewing tools for cosplayers, complete with tips on how they can level up your projects. This guide is all about giving you the information you need to succeed! Let's dive into what makes these toolbox treasures special and how they can support you along your cosplay journey.

Pan Tip! Most of these items might just be waiting for you in our starter tool sets and our tools shop online (wink, wink).

Non-Permanent Fabric Marking Tool

Tailor’s chalk, washable pens, or heat-erasable markers help transfer pattern markings onto fabric without leaving permanent marks. These are especially useful for marking darts, hems, and button placements.

Pan Tip!

  • Choose a fabric marking tool that works with your fabric and washes out easily — we love the Clover Chaco Liner.
  • Always test your marking tool on a scrap piece of fabric first to ensure it doesn’t bleed through or leave unsightly marks. Some fabrics are especially vulnerable to ink stains, even if the tools say “non-permanent”!
  • Keep both a light-colored and a dark-colored marking tool on hand for different fabric types.

Say goodbye to frustrating fabric marking mishaps! The Clover Chaco Liner glides effortlessly across most fabrics without snagging or staining, leaving clean, easy-to-see lines. Its ergonomic design allows the wheel to rotate both forward and backward, giving you greater control and precision with every stroke. Plus, the chalk markings can be easily removed with water or will naturally disappear over time, making this tool a reliable choice for sewists of all levels.

Pan Tip! Read our blog post for the full rundown on why chalk is so useful to have on hand, then grab a Clover Chaco Liner Refill so you're never marking on empty!

Clear Beveled Plastic Rulers

Keep your lines straight and your measurements sharp with this 12" Westcott Beveled Plastic Ruler! At 2″ wide, it features a grid broken into 1″, ½″, ¼″, 8ths of an inch, and tick marks to indicate 16ths. This ruler is great for sewing projects of any scale and sewists of all skill levels. We also offer a 6″ version that’s 1″ wide (perfect for on-the-go projects), and an 18″ ruler available only at conventions (not for sale online due to shipping limitations).

Its beveled (or slanted) shape makes it easier to draw precise lines without the edge interfering, and its see-through design lets you view the fabric underneath, so you’ll never miss a mark!

Metal Loop Turner

A metal loop turner with a circle on one end and a hook on the other.

Whether you're making bag ties or spaghetti straps, our 10.5" long Metal Loop Turner is your secret to turning those tricky fabric tubes inside out with ease!

Seam Ripper

Mistakes happen! A seam ripper is your trusty sidekick for when they do. With its thin, sharp blade featuring a safety ball and a compact, extendable handle, backtracking is a breeze! This seam ripper is our go-to tool for removing stitches and fixing mistakes, whether you need to undo a small error or take apart an entire seam. It's a game changer and a true time saver --- like a real-life ctrl-z button for sewing!

Pan Tip! Find this item alongside other essential sewing tools in our FSCO® Starter Tool Set and FSCO Travel Starter Tool Set.

Measuring Tape

Our 60" measuring tape is an essential tool for every sewist! Its flexible design makes it perfect for taking accurate measurements, whether you're figuring out someone’s dimensions or working on curved, uneven surfaces. Reliable, versatile, and easy to use — it's a must-have for any sewing project!

Fun Fact! Most measuring tapes, like ours, include inches on one side and centimeters on the other for universal usage.

Glass Head Pins

two boxes, each containing 100 glass-head pins

Glass head pins function the same way as other pins, except for one awesome difference: they’re heat-resistant, allowing you to iron directly over them (or even boil them), without worrying about the pinheads melting.

Pan Tip! Pair them with a pin cushion for easy access and organization!

Thread Clippers

Loose threads don’t stand a chance against these spring-loaded thread clippers. Unlike traditional scissors, they’re quick, efficient, and ergonomically designed to reduce hand strain during long sewing sessions.

Pan Tip! Always clip your thread tails after you sew a seam to avoid jamming your machine or ending up with a messy finished garment.

Folding Scissors

Five pairs of folding scissors in various orientations. From left to right, their colors are: red, orange, lime green, blue, and black.

Need a compact cutting tool? Small enough to fit in your convention kit, but sharp enough to get the job done, folding scissors are perfect for cosplayers on the move. They sport curved tips that fold neatly for travel and unfold to tackle loose threads or fraying edges, so you won’t get side-eyed by the TSA or accidentally hurt yourself while you’re away from home.

You can learn more about folding scissors and how they compare to thread clippers in this blog post

Fabric Shears

Right- and left-handed scissors in respective packaging.

Investing in a solid pair of fabric shears is a non-negotiable for sewists. These specialty scissors are designed exclusively for cutting fabric, ensuring smooth, clean edges without fraying. Just don’t use them on paper or anything other than fabric, as it will dull the blades!

Pan Tip! Look for fabric shears with comfortable handles, and remember that they’re an investment — regular maintenance, like sharpening and tune-ups, is affordable and can extend the life of your shears, saving you from having to buy a new pair.

While we don’t offer individual fabric shears, they are included in our FSCO Starter Tool Set. We offer right- and left-handed options!

Pin Cushion

The classic tomato pin cushion with a fresh twist! This iconic tool adds a pop of color to your sewing space while keeping your pins handy. It’s compact, practical, and a great addition to your sewing station. Plus, it features a strawberry emery for sharpening and cleaning your pins, ensuring they stay on point.

This item pairs perfectly with our 100-count pack of Glass Head Pins, or you can find both along with other essential sewing tools in our FSCO Starter Tool Set.
